The Herondo Storm Drain near Redondo and Hermosa has been under watch by #HealTheBay largely due to the vast amounts of storm waters that hit last week, but also because of a broken pump. In the Storm that brought over 1.7 Million gallons of water Monday and Tuesday The City of Torrance saw Industrial waste hit its beaches and head straight out to the sea. But how can this be?

Because there was and is no proper protocols for notifying the public, the storm water polluted with garbage, runoff, and industrial waste that elevated bacterial levels far beyond healthy, many residents were unaware that the beaches were contaminated. So on Monday 810,000 gallons of stagnant bacteria laden water flowed from the Herondo drain, and then Tuesday 972,000. Under existing protocols the cities down the pipe did not need to be notified, and so bacteria that causes Meningitis, Ecoli, and Urinary Tract Infections was detected in the water up to 50 yards out. The pump had burned out a month ago and the city had yet to replace it when the storm hit.

There are several items that concern me: one, being that the sand was seen contaminated then it is fair to say that when the water was absorbed so was the bacteria so our children or innocent friends and family who might sit in the sand or play would be innocent victims to life threatening bacteria:

“On the days of the discharge, a large amount of water pooled up at the Herondo outfall, collecting on the sand and flowing into the ocean.”

Two, that with the amount of rain that fell last night and this weekend exceeding that of the prior storm; once again the industrial waste has hit the ocean and the beaches replenishing the toxic bacteria. And the public is none the wiser. These are dangerous bacterias that don’t just bubble up from the ground on any given day. They aren’t your normal run of the mill threats that one expects to encounter when riding the bus, or last minute shopping at the mall. Or at least I certainly don’t. With Ballona Creek also relatively close by I worry for our precious wildlife and the repercussions there as well. They don’t always put signs out, they have admitted that they mostly so but with it being Christmas Eve I would hate for anyone to suffer from this act of negligence.
